Beer + food AND desserts? Ummm yes please! Beer and food make any party fun! You might be wondering "what do you serve at an Oktoberfest party?" Oktoberfest is right around the corner, and we have some great ideas of how you can celebrate!
Have you ever tried some traditional German desserts? Germany is known for their beer and brats, but their desserts are definitely something to write home about!
We listed 10 of our favorites that you might like to try this season.
A beautifully layered honey almond vanilla cream cake, with caramelized almonds on top.
Rote Grütze is basically a “pudding” made from raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, and red currants, and then topped with cold fresh cream (my favorite), vanilla sauce, whipped cream or ice cream.
I'll admit, when I first think of German desserts and candy, my mind goes straight to chocolate! Many of their chocolates are filled with salty hazelnuts, robust espresso, and creamy caramel. They're SO darn good!!
These are the perfect morning treat with your warm cup of coffee. Flaky sweet pastry crust filled with sweet and tart fruit compote, and sprinkled with toasted almonds and powdered sugar.
Black forest cake is probably one of the most popular German desserts. Decadent layers of Chocolate cake , cherries, whipped cream, and pretty little chocolate shavings on top.
I know what you're thinking... we LOVE cheesecake! However, the German version is a bit different than the ones we have here in the US. A traditional German cheesecake is made with a cheese called Quark. It can be compared to cottage cheese, but without the curds. It has a very mild taste and is notably creamy and smooth. Perfect for a cheesecake!
This dessert is a bit different than we are used to here in the states, but it's a huge treat in Germany! Basically it's a yeast dumpling smothered in a creamy vanilla sauce.
The kids love this one! Its just vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, and strawberry sauce! Put the ice cream through a potato ricer and it makes the most fun little "noodles"!
German apple strudel is made fairly similarly to how we make it here in the states. However, they tend to add raisins to theirs.
But its still the same cinnamon-y, gooey, goodness that we're used to.
Last but not least! The pièce de ré sis tance! German chocolate cake is so decadent and delicious.
Layers of fluffy moist chocolate cake, sweetened coconut and chopped pecans, rich chocolate frosting, and topped with more of those chocolate shavings we all love. It is by far my favorite German dessert!
If you want to throw an Oktoberfest party, first and foremost you'll want to start with appetizers! A German Beer Cheese dip with freshly baked pretzels is bound to make every tummy happy!
Alongside that you can put together a quick Bavarian style cheese board with Brie, Camembert, Bleu, Gruyere, and Swiss cheeses pairing them with grapes, butter, radishes, pretzels, rolls, and other assortments of bread – this board is a smorgasbord of deliciousness!
Pairing these with an ice cold IPA or Märzen would be perfect! And of course, it wouldn't be a party without some GLITTER! Make sure you add some Brew Glitter to your beer, and Tinker Dust to your desserts for that added sine and festive touch. If you aren't throwing the party yourself, but are attending a party someone else is throwing, you can always use any of these suggestions above to bring with you! Everybody loves a good cheese board, beer, or pretzels and cheese dip. Even a simple store bought German chocolate cake would be fab and so appreciated by the guests, I'm sure.
