Types of Edible Glitters & Dusts at Bakell®

All of our edible food-grade dusts & glitters contain various mica powder pigments and go through a specific manufacturing process allowing the mineral to be edible & consumable. Ingredients found in our edible glitter & dust brands include dextrose, rice starch and color additives specifically approved for food use, including mica-based pearlescent pigments and FD&C colors such as FD&C Blue No. 1. The FDA has approved all of the ingredients being used in our edible glitters & edible dusts based on the FDA approved ingredients & usage levels. Yes, all of our edible products are compliant, audited and approved by the FDA. Bakell® has even taken it a step further, not only are our ingredients FDA compliant, the Bakell® production facilities are also FDA registered and inspected. The melting point of our edible Dusts & Glitters is approx. 1300°C according to one of our third party labs. However, the melting point for the colored pigments will vary from one colorant to the next, this melting point approximation is meant only for our MICA PEARLESCENT additive.

The answer is really NO, you can't. So we don't recommend it. Here is why...

Firstly, it’s important to note that not all “Luster Dust” and not all “Tinker Dust®” glitter & dust products will work in cocktails, spirits, liquors, drinks, etc because not all of the ingredients in Tinker Dust® & Luster are FDA compliant specifically for liquor, cocktails, spirits, drinks, etc. In the edible glitter industry, being precise is paramount to maintaining regulatory compliance with the United States Food & Drug Administration as the FDA is very specific as to the ingredients in edible glitter used for food versus glitter being used in drinks & beverages. They are not one in the same.

Secondly, Brew Glitter® is an edible glitter product we manufacture & produce that was designed and intended specifically for drinks. All ingredients used in Brew Glitter® meet ALL of the FDA regulations for alcoholic beverages and all ingredients are FDA compliant for such use. Brew Glitter® is a true “EDIBLE GLITTER” made specifically for drinks and beverages. With respect to form & design, the particle size of Brew Glitter® is larger than Luster Dust, and slight denser. In comparison to Tinker Dust®, Brew Glitter® particles/ grains are smaller and rounder in shape allowing the particle(s) to suspend in liquids for long periods of time without settling or floating. Luster Dust is a water soluble product, which of course we also produce and make, that is a far-far finer particle size by design to allow the particle(s) to mix into liquids in order to create an edible paint.

In short, there’s a reason we manufacture all three product lines which is because there isn’t a silver bullet or one-size-fits-all product that can be used across the spectrum of edible glitter applications – or else as a manufacturer & producer of the products, we would have done it a long time ago.

Kosher Certification is the stamp of kosher approval by a rabbinic Agency verifying they have checked the products ingredients, production facility and actual production to ensure all ingredients, derivatives, tools and machinery have no trace of non kosher substances.

- Tinker Dust® (Edible/ Food Grade) - A beautiful edible glitter, shinier and more glittery than luster dusts! These dusts - come in a large variety of colors with a lustrous, sparkle and shine. More similar to Disco Dusts or Dazzler Dusts, but with a slightly silkier texture. Tinker Dust is 100% FDA compliant & food grade! They are lovely sprinkled on frosting, whip cream or brushed on chocolate covered strawberries & other desserts!
- Luster Dust (Edible/ Food Grade) - Are very shiny fine grain edible pearlized powder! typically brushed on or mixed with a liquid and painted or airbrushed.
- Brew Glitter® (Edible/ Food Grade) - Brew Glitter® is a glittery powder made here in the USA that can be added directly to beverages to make it shine, swirl and sparkle!
- Petal Dust (Edible/ Food Grade) - Are very fine powder edible dusts, with vibrant matte colors, these are most often used for projects such as edible flower brushing!
- Dazzler Dust & Hologram Dust (Non-Toxic) - Are very shiny, glittery, non-toxic decorating sprinkle intended for decoration.
- Highlighter Dust (Non-Toxic) - Deep toned pearl sparkle dusts, very similar to luster dusts!

So what the heck do words like "edible", "non-edible", "food-grade" and "non-toxic" mean when referring to dusts & glitters?

- Edible: You can consume it and eat it (same as food-grade)
- Food Grade: You can consume it and eat it (same as edible)
- Non-toxic: Contains non-harmful and/ or non-toxic ingredients but is not FDA approved (same as non-edible)
- Non-edible: Advisable not to eat the product (same as non-toxic)

** Please note: Not ALL dusts and glitters that claim to be edible and/ or food-grade are indeed edible and/ or food-grade. In fact, more often than not, they are not. Many knock off brands "cut" their glitters and dusts with non-edible and non-FDA approved ingredients to make a quick buck. So be very careful and be sure you are buying from a trusted name brand in the cake, food, beverage or baking industry. If it is really cheap in price, chances are the dust/ glitter or the brand it's coming from, is not using FDA compliant ingredients and the product is not edible or consumable.

This is one of those instances where looks can be deceiving. Each and every jar of our dust and/or glitter is filled by weight as opposed to volume. Whereas our product is manufactured using various amounts of edible pigments, the lighter colors such as white and clear are packed tighter than some of the deeper colors such as Gold and Silver so while it may appear to the human eye that certain jars contain less product, in reality, the weight is exactly the same in every jar. Simply put. some powders are more fluffy than others but rest assured, you're still getting the same amount of product.

When using our products in a busy bar setting, we know that time is money and no bartender has the time to open a jar and start spooning out glitter into a glass and/or cocktail shaker. Both the spray pumps and the shakers are easily the most popular product we sell to bar, club and restaurant groups. These two options obviously make for an easy time-friendly application to liven up any beer or cocktail but they will also allow for a more controlled application to ensure consistency in every drink served. The other thing to note is that a little glitter goes a long way so as your create cocktails on your menu using Brew Glitter, you'll want to ensure you identify and train your bar staff on best practices.
